Shaped Bokeh

This is a discussion on Shaped Bokeh within the General Photos forums, part of the Showcase category; It's not a new concept but I thought I would give it a go. I know it is kinda cheesy ...

It's not a new concept but I thought I would give it a go. I know it is kinda cheesy but it is also kinda cool.

I had a link somewhere. One method is to make a lenscap of sorts from black construction paper and cut out the shape.

This was a real quick hack job on my 50mm (look at the red LEDs):

Sonny's came out much better.

Mine was a worse attempt at this site's info: DIY - Create Your Own Bokeh | DIYPhotography.net

Thanks a lot, Sonny. I caved and ordered this to play with, along with the camera cookie cutters:

LOL, sorry Keith. I only lead the horse to water. I don't force them to drink.

Thanks Jake. This is the link I used CLICK ME. Here are the three templates I created using construction paper.

The fist one I made was the heart shape. I thought I would get all fancy and make it so I could slip over my lens. It took too long so my next two I used gaffer tape to hold them in place.

Yeah, mine looked like yours. I needed to take more time with the cutout sizing. I think I had to too small then went too big.

According to the link I posted you figure out the size of the "hole" by taking your focal length and divide it by your aperture.

Since I was using my 70-200 this is what I calculated:
100mm/f2.8= 35mm or 3.5cm

After I cut out a circle that was 77mm in diameter (or larger) to fit over the front element of the 70-200 I made a square that was 3.5cm x 3.5cm and fit my shape into those dimensions. The square shape also has to be in the exact center for best results.

I have some shaped disks that came with my Lensbaby. I'll have to check the sizes and give this a try. I've not had much luck using the Lensbaby.
