Critique: CC:

Driving around near the neighborhood today during a break in the rain, we found this cool couch and I snapped a few shots. I plan to go back tomorrow more prepared and try some more shots, any ideas on set-up or composition etc would be welcomed.

#1 reason to never leave the house without a camera!

Great shots and I absolutely love the lighting!

Thanks for the kind words! I used my speedlight to light the girlfriend.

Also found out the hard way that shooting at 1.8 on my 50 1.8 isn't very sharp, lost a few good shots because of that. Guess I'll have to pick up the 1.4 or 1.2.

Dang it! I was wanting to get a 1.8. Guess I will have to dig a little deeper. :o

Did you have your Speedlite off camera?

It was on camera, with the defuser. it's a Canon 430 EX II. I know people use them off camera, and I'd love to but not sure how. I'm guessing I can get some sort of hot shoe thing for the bottom with a cable jack for my pocket wizard?

Yessir. I haven't tried them out yet, but I got a pair of receivers with a wireless trigger so I think with those a person can hand-hold a Speedlite. Got 'em on Amazon for something silly like $25-30.

I'm just learning about flash techniques, but one that you may like, to control ambient light is to use a higher shutter speed and a center weighted flash on your subject. From what I have seen on this you can get total control on bright backgrounds and illuminate your subject in many ways. The shot you have I like but, with what I have seen using this technique you would get the model in shot one illuminated the way she is and the ambient light of shot two. I think its kind of like a strobist technique. : )
