Wink Motion pictures - 12-24-2006, 09:41 AM

Yesterday, my 6-year old son and I raked leaves and made a huge pile for him to jump into. I thought, "this would be an opportunity to take some motion shots." So I did.

These captures are from my first attempt at panning. These are some of the keepers. Most of them were not keepers. Is that true for most of y'all too? What percentage are keepers when you do panning shots?

The last shot is a rear-curtain sync shot.

All comments are appreciated.

Thanks.

Larry

I like the first four. It looks like you have a willing model for motion shots. As long as you rake, I'm sure he will jump!

I don't get too many keepers either. I have to practice a few times to get the right shutter speed and flash for the photo I want.

Don't forget about the zoom blur technique.

Practice practice practice. That is all I can say about panning.
If you want to practice panning, find a golden retriever and you have a willing partner for the rest of the day. Like in gun shooting, follow through is very important.

It depends on the subject. Cars driving by move in a fairly straight line and allow more effective panning. When people or animals run, their motion is not all in one direction, and panning doesn't have exactly the same effect. It still looks neat.

You can pan at different shutter speeds and just see what looks good.

I shall be telling this with a sigh Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by,
and then it petered out and I had to retrace my steps and wasted half a day.
