Cool Words/No Words: Wide Open! The Bokeh Festival - 05-07-2008, 12:46 PM

Promted by the beginnings of the discussion here...

Bokeh Thread

...and a nudge from a participant in the first W/NW: Something Old thread...

...here's the next installment. Bokeh. Wide Open. Close Focus. Not so close focus. Show us what your lenses do with out of focus areas.

Following up on my statements above, I'm placing two photographs here to start the fun. In my opinion, one of these works and one of these doesn't work. Y'all tell me which is which.

Of course, this thread is mostly for photos with a few words.

Bring 'em on!

Enjoy!

This is my grandcat, Avery. She's sitting in a red and green plaid chair -- not a good background. That was my reason for shooting wide open. She has really weird eyes.

It might be a good time to mention that "bokeh" is more than just shallow DOF; it refers to the quality of the OOF background. Just thought I'd mention that. :-)

Now, I'll see if I can produce something worth posting.

Ah yes. The quality. Good. Bad. Ugly.

She's got weird eyes and she's kind of a weird cat. She a scaredy cat, but she can also be
frightening. I don't mess with her too much.

LOL, I have the feeling you shot that just in time or the camera may have been shredded.

Yep!

Chris, I like that use of depth of field. It adds a story line to the shot while keeping the subject as the main focus.

I'm a newbie here and I've read the posted links already. I'm not sure I understand it all but I do have a question. What is the difference in bokeh and macro? (I'm a point & shoot camera user and I never have done any darkroom photo processing, so my technical photography vocabulary is limited.) Can someone give me a "simple answer" to my question or an example of both to help me understand the difference?

Thank you!
CarolynM
