planning fireworks shots in DFW - 06-26-2008, 10:28 PM

I have shot fireworks before and have gotten some real nice shots of the bursts, but I want to try something different this year and I'm not sure where to go for the attempt. I would like to try to get some shots of fireworks over water to hopefully get the reflection in the water. Do you know where in the DFW area that they are going to have a fireworks display next to a lake? If so, I would probably need to know the exact location of the launch site so I can go early and scout the best angle to shoot from.
Thanks

Do you have any idea what area of the lake they will launch from, or at least which side of the lake?

Thanks
I already saw that map, but I was hoping to find out which side the launch would be from so I can set up on the opposite side of the lake.

Sachse is holding fireworks show for the first time ever on Thursday, 3 July beginning at 9ish. The location is Heritage Park in Sachse.

Garland Star Spangled 4th is always a good show at Firewheel Town Center on Friday, 4 July at 9:30. KC and the Sunshine Band is playing and local broadcast on 770AM.

Thanks Glen, but it doesn't look like either of those shows would be over water like I am looking for. The one in Grapevine would probably be perfect if I can just find out what part of the lake to set up at.

My suggestion would be to troll out there late in the week and look for areas roped off, fenced off, or perhaps a barge since it's on a lake.....surely they have to have some lead setup time for a large show.

For example, here in Houston at the Freedom Festival they have large areas in the immediate vicinity of the fireworks fenced off as "fallout" zones. These areas are also right next to the firework setup areas along the bayou.

I've heard that Lake Grapevine is supposed to be a very good place to shoot. However, if you can't make it there try to find something near a downtown area and try to shoot the fireworks as they are reflected off of the buildings. It's a bit of a departure from your standard fireworks shots. See my example below.

Thanks guys for the advise. Checking out Lake Grapevine before the show sounds like the best bet. I'll go by earlier in the day on the 4th and see if I find where they are setting up. I have the map showing the viewing areas during the show and since they are all on the east side of the lake, I think I can figure it out.
Now to just hope for fairly calm water that night to get some decent reflections.
