Farm Equipment Series ( HDR ) - 12-21-2008, 09:15 PM

I spent the weekend out at a farm and spent a day shooting some of the idle farm equipment. Some looked as if it had not been moved for several years. Love to hear your thoughts.

I love the perspective on #2, with the implement near eye-level in the foreground and the strong clouds in the background. That's my favorite of these.

I think that #4 is too saturated and contrasty.

i love #2! there is something about the HDR on it that just makes it stand out more then the others. I love the colors and subjects on the rest of them. very nicely done!

I agree with the comment to declutter/simplify the image. However my main comment is that the HDR processing renders the significant and insignificant elements equally. My eye is unable to settle on a simple visual path through any of the images. Maybe you could try to tone down the overall vibrancy of the HDR rendering and reduce the saturation of those elements that are less important to the story you are trying to tell.

In my opinion In-Your-Face HDR is good for grabbing attention and for certain types of commercial images but quickly becomes tiresome. I'm fully aware that this sort of over the top processing is very common in commercial work and gaming.

For the most part I am not a fan of HDR but I really like how the Ford tracker came out and enjoyed the whole series.

I think these are well presented for HDR pics. I prefer #4 just because of the accentuation of the old grease, green sprouts and the rust and verdigris.

The Ford 4000 is my favorite. I think it would be even better if you could bring a little more life to the "Ford 4000" name.

I like the first three the best. They have a great 3D look and feel to them.

The bottom two are a little "busy".

HDR typically does have the fans and not fans. I know it is not for everyone but if I can produce images that those who typically do not enjoy HDR I feel I have succeded. So thanks everyone for the comments pro and con on these images. I really do appreciate all feedback.

Merrick, as for the boat, just getting some rest for the winter I suppose.

Dang... I was hoping it was someone you knew and they were looking to get rid of the boat for really cheap. No such luck I guess....

p.s. What app did you use for your HDR? I use Photomatix Pro, and if you play with the smoothing as well and the strength, you can make HDR look, not so HDR, while still achieving the DR part..... did that make sense??
