So what would you guys say the min speed for a 7D would be?

there is not a minimum speed for any type of camera. It all depends on what you shoot.

If you shoot portraits then speed is not an issue. If you're shooting sports then speed is more important.

I use the Transcend 400X 16 GIG Compact Flash Cards in my 7D and 5D2. They clear the buffer very quickly. I highly recommend them. I have a half-dozen or so of these 16 GIG Cards. They are $58 right now on Amazon.

I just don't want a slow card in case I shoot some video or sports as my kid gets older

How would one know if the speed is too slow...that it is the card, not the camera? I use Extreme IVs in my D3 and I dont recall it ever filling the buffer, even in sports and shooting at the highest frame rate that shots off the af system.

On the other Gand, i have noticed my d90 slow down on CH and it surprised me because I didn't know it was so limited. I just assumed it was the camera, but maybe it is the card I use in it. Usually a 16gb cl4, but I do have an Extreme III I could use. How would a slow card affect video? It appears to record video fine????
