Complete Off Camera Flash Kit for $136 - 11-03-2011, 06:40 PM

Complete Off Camera Flash Kit for $136

So for a whopping $136.07 +shipping you can get you a complete wireless Off Camera Flash setup!

This is the flash I started out with and still have by the way and it works great. There isn't any fancy LCD displays or motorized zoom features (manual only) on the flash but it works great for OCF since its full manual, no ettl and is very inexpensive.

The triggers and light stand kit are not the top of the line products BUT they do work and will definitely do the trick if you're looking to start out with the least amount of money out of pocket as necessary. You can always upgrade later if you see fit.

So now there is NO excuse as to why you haven't gotten into Off Camera Flash.. It "costing too much money" is no longer an excuse.

-------------------------------------------

Vivitar 285HV Flash
The built-in variable power of the Vivitar 285HV auto professional flash provides you with fill flash and the ability to shoot properly exposed rapid-sequence pictures. This vertical bounce flash gives your photographs soft, professional lighting. The four f-stops give you control over the flash distance range and the depth of field, while the auto Thyristor circuitry allows for a faster recycling time as well as more flashes per set of batteries.

CowboyStudio NPT-04, 4 Channel Wireless Hot Shoe Flash Trigger/Receiver
This set is designed for photographic studio and on-location work to trigger various flash lights. The transmitter is attached on the hot shoe of the camera while the receiver is plugged into the studio flash. Each receiver works with one studio flash. Additional receivers are available to purchase .

-------------------------------------------

CowboyStudio Single Flash Stand Kit
This kit includes all the basics for on-the-go photography.

The adapter provides you with full control for the positioning your flash using the easy to adjust wingnuts. With the built-in umbrella holder at the base, you can have portable studio lighting without the hassle.

The translucent umbrella is a great addition to your studio setup. This umbrella works well to diffuse the light from any flash, creating a soft even light for your subject. The lack of a black backing gives this umbrella the ability to flash through the umbrella if needed and simulate the effects of a softbox. Portability is a plus for location shots. This size is good for head shots and small to medium sized products.

The light stand is perfect for the studio photographer. Made from strong aluminum alloy, it can be used with reflectors, boom stands, strobe flash lights, and backgrounds.

another flash suggestion. i recently got the lumopro 160 flash. its about twice as much as that vivitar ($160), but it puts out almost the exact amount of power as my $500 Nikon SB900 (about 2/10 less power at max). Also very adjustable, goes down to 1/64th power, good zoom range, and can be triggered in every way possible

I've heard great things about those as well... I'll post the info for the flash in case people wanna see that one too. Thanks!

LumoPro LP160 Manual Flash
The LP160 Quad-sync flash builds on the success of previous models, like the LP120, giving amateur and professional photographers even more features. Today's digital photographers are looking for powerful, small flashes that are reasonably priced and well constructed. The LP160 is the flash that delivers the power, features and price point to meet that need. As with previous projects, LumoPro crowd-sourced the additional features from the Strobist community, a popular online group of photographers devoted to working with small, battery powered flashes. This creative and sophisticated group led the developers to create the tool to meet the demand. Improvements included in this new model are impressive and built to fit the needs of today's working photographers. The LP160 features twice the power and quicker recycling for faster shooting. The Full to 1/64th power setting and digital optical slave make the flash more usable under low light situations. A 7degree tilt, metal hot-shoe, electronic zoom, and improved body construction add to the long list of features for professionals. All other features from the popular LP120 are present, including the Optical slave, PC and Miniphone syncro ports, and manual power adjustments. The power output of the LP160 is equivalent to the top of the line flashes from camera manufacturers such as Canon and Nikon. An exciting new feature will allow even more integration with existing flash systems: the new digital optical slave will ignore the 'pre-flash' - a common feature of TTL flashes for obtaining exposure information. This important addition enables photographers to manually control the LP160, in conjunction with their TTL flashes, without transmitting a TTL signal or exposure information, or having the LP160 flash when the pre-flash activates.

This has been said before, but I'll repeat it. The surprising thing to me is when people pay almost a thousand dollars for a brand new camera, then don't want to pay for a flash. They're convinced by camera manufacturers that it's all they need, since the camera performs well at high ISO. Sure, there may be enough available light for a 'correct' exposure, but the direction and quality aren't always ideal. When I got my first Vivitar flash like this years ago, I was struck by the sharpness and impact that the extra, controlled light allowed to happen. Since the flash was the dominant light source, the flash not only froze the subject, but it caused the subject to be brighter than the background. Since the light was modified into a beautiful, large light source, it caused the subject to look better than it ever could have with available light. I would advise anyone who's about to spend large amounts of money on a camera, and who's primary subjects are either people or small/medium objects, budget for a set-up like this when choosing equipment. It'll hold value better than those $900 entry-level bodies, and it's as good as what most professional photographers could get for most of the last century.

Have to agree Robin, and these days, what comes out of the camera isn't the final image. Without Photoshop to go with your new camera, you're only taking half a picture.

Thanks for this, Abel. Does Amazon have this setup together as a package or do we need to add each item to our cart separately?

Each item has to be added to your cart separately... this will let users possible upgrade the flash, triggers or lightstand combo.

Thanks

Another cheap flash suggestion is the Yongnuo line, I have one of the yn462's, along with a vintage vivitar and vintage canon speedlight, and have had no problems with it, the yn462 is my go to for one flash setups without a doubt. It is a full manual flash, and it's dial for power, so you have to kinda guesstimate your flash power level, but I have found it is pretty easy to get it close on the first try after a while. Puts out a pretty good amount of power, has decent recycle time, and you can pick up 3 of them for about $100.

Amazon.com: Yongnuo Flash Speedlight Yn-462 for Canon Nikon Pentax: Camera & Photo

$35.95

Yes, but you will need to get an extra receiver for your second flash, the company makes a kit that comes with one transmitter and 2 receivers, you just have to look for it, otherwise it's a bit more expensive to buy extra receivers separately.
