Just noticed this thread. Dang it, the killer sale is over with. Still a good price, but it's about $16 more now.
I've been using PSP ever since version 4 (mid-1990s?), and X2 for a couple of years now. I dismissed X3 after d/l'ing its demo -- really did not like what Corel had done to the interface. I d/l'd the X4 demo about a week ago and have been using it exclusively ever since. It loads faster than X2. There are things about it that I don't really need, but that aren't too intrusive. At least they got rid of the things about X3 I didn't like. I still think Corel is trying a bit too hard to make it look and feel like Lightroom, but it's not so bad now. The Organizer has been redone. Honestly I still prefer the old layout, which was more of a page format whose size can be adjusted, whereas the new Organizer is a single row of images running across the bottom that can be scrolled back and forth. Because it's so narrow, I find I have to be more precise in mouse cursor location or else it'll close. But I guess I'll get used to it, and I do like that it has multiple tray capability now.
There are some new routines, but mostly the interface is very close to X2 (which I like). I haven't had the chance yet to do much with any of the new editing/image manipulation tools, except for one called "local tone mapping," found under Adjust>Brightness and Contrast>. It's like an instant HDR routine and you can dial in the amount of "tone mapping" you want. Kinda interesting for some applications, I suppose.
I will most likely upgrade once my demo's time expires. I also have a copy of Photoshop, but I use X2 much more often than PS. My biggest complaint with X2 is it does not handle 16-bit files very well, and it's for this reason that I still have PS handy. Hopefully, Corel's seen clear to finally deal with this glaring shortcoming. At least I haven't gotten the pop-up yet in X4, warning me that it has to reduce the bit depth in order to perform basic manipulations.
I will say though that I really like Photoshop's Camera Raw feature compared to PSP's. It's one area that it has it all over both X2 and X4 and is reason enough for me to keep using it. |
