Jul 4th Fireworks with Skyline - 06-29-2009, 03:46 PM

Can anyone suggest good locations around Houston DT to capture the fireworks with skyline view? I had been to the park (Eleanor Tinsley Park)last year where fireworks happens and it seemed 'too close' for fireworks photography..

Thanks,
Naveen

Wherever you decide to go, get there early! Last year we planned on going to the top of a parking garage to catch the fireworks, but found out they were all closed and ended up in the car driving during the fireworks. It was less than ideal.

I don't know how much of Memorial is closed, but taking pictures from Police Memorial located on Memorial Drive sounds like a good location. Also, for the fireworks, but without the skyline perhaps the Hobby Center Garage if you can get in there.

I'd love some other ideas as well.

I don't think you will be able to take photos from the Police Memorial. Ground zero for the celebration is Eleanor Tinsley Park and the fireworks are shot off from somewhere behind there. I imagine that will be closed off. I'm not 100% on that though.

I drove by Police Memorial, and it is indeed fenced off.

Several years ago, I parked at the corner of Elder and Girard, by the old Jeff Davis Hospital (now lofts) and the HFD headquarters. It was a pretty good location. It's one of the highest spots in the city (ground level, anyway) and we listened to the simulcast on the radio. Things may be a little different now that the hospital has been renovated and there are residents. Maybe there would be parking on the street just a little north of there, in that neighborhood, but they rebuilt those lots with 3-story townhomes, so I'm not sure.
