Post On to the next vacant/deserted/abandoned/forgotten neighborhood! - 07-25-2009, 05:39 AM

Ok, so my last abandoned/vacant neighborhood didn't last too long due to the dreaded bulldozer of progress, so lets try the next one I discovered a couple of weeks ago.

This one is located in the 5100 block of Airport in southeast Houston on the banks of Sims Bayou. Judging by the calendars on the walls, it appears to have been vacant since around the turn of the century (something funny about saying that) and may have been condemned due to it's proximity to the frequently overflowing Sims Bayou. It's literally on the edge of the banks.

Anyway, there are about 10 houses there and some are really old and large, many still have trash and personal junk inside of them. The driveways are covered with junk, roof shingles, trash, and (of all things) boats. There are broken televisions, beds, a piano, desks, and tons of other junk.

It's really hard to see from the street because of all the overgrowth and there are no fences or anything like that. In fact you can walk right up to it from the jogging trail along the bayou. HCAD lists the value at $500 for the land and $2300 for the house so get your house now, no credit check (well according to the sign)! And yes, someone, somewhere, for some reason, owns it, so the usual disclaimers apply.......

I did not see anyone there during my visit, other than a horse and some people walking on the jogging trail. It even has a handy dandy parking area available right when you drive in. Never did figure out anything about the horse left out there though......

If it's easier, and there are more pictures there, my set is on flickr. If you want to know where it is, click here.

And last but not least.....

Sincerely,
Z_Malloc

Marketing FAIL on the last one.

Thanks for the heads-up! I'll be sure to take my snake chaps and...a saddle? Wonder if that's more of the post-Allison BS. I remember seeing an interview with a whole bunch of homeowners around Sims where they were upset that 'nobody has done something' about the bayou overflowing, that this has been happening for years. Uhhh...

Think it's owned by the Feds/State as part of the buy outs they did after Allison. Lots of complaints about how they bought property and then let it just sit and rot and not cleaned up.

That's just awful. Excellent pictures, just sad to see things like that right here in Houston.

There are a lot of places in town that look like that. Most of them, unfortunately, are still inhabited!

Bing maps seem a lot better than Google for location checking.

Found a greatplace for some shooting in the future - derelict warehouse/loading docks, with partial torn down walls, etc. Great thing - H-Town skyline in the background.

Bad part - Daytime only, and probably groups, since the area is bad.

Savvy property owners would realize that a photographer willing to "adopt" the property is an ally who would keep an eye on the place as well as documenting any trouble.

Heading out this way in a few minutes. I only have a few days of summer left and I'm trying to pack in a bunch of stuff! I'm losing. :-(

Wish me luck!
