I did this ride back in 2007 and have plans to do it again but this time with proper photography in mind.

Its not far out of Houston and was a lot of fun.

Depends on what you mean by Houston area. If you are willing to drive about 100 miles west to Lavaca and Fayette counties, you'll hit the motherlode.

Look up the "Painted Churches" just west of Houston in the Schulemburg area. Quite Famous.

There is also a small old wooden church in Downtown Houston - Sam Houston Park. One of the oldest churches in the area and originally located quite a few miles from here and moved into downtown a few decades ago.
