I'm trying to think of a good place for you and the family. There's a lot of sargassium sp? grass on the beach right now. I know there is some big drift wood trees on Quintana Beach close to the jetties but that is a good hour south of Galveston. But again all that dead seaweed is not appealing nor is it fun to walk in. You might have a better photo op on the seawall. You would like the seashell shops on the Seawall. I always did. Plus you guys will get hungry so I'm thinking being close to food will be better.
Another reason I'm thinking the seawall is the city cleans the beaches so it may look better. If you go further down the beach towards San Luis pass you will see some walking bridges that go over dunes to the beach. That might look good for a picture too. Good luck and have fun!

Matagorda has a lot more like that than anywhere near Galveston: you will probably want to go in something with 4x4 depending on beach conditions.

Last year, I scouted the entire island for a good sunset location where I could get a pic of the sun sinking into the water. I didn't find any, and I drove from one end of the island to the other. Made it to the west end of the island a few minutes after sundown. The angle was just wrong. I suspect that during the middle of winter, because the sun is lower in the sky, there might be someplace. But I'm not too hopeful.

You might have some luck on the Bolivar Peninsula, but I dunno what the access is like there. I'm basing this on looking at a map, btw. My conclusion has been that if you want a shot of the sun over the water, better to plan on sunrise pics, rather than sunset.

If you don't need a pic of the sun over the water, just a nice sunset shot, I would recommend Surfside beach over Galveston. The sand is a lighter color -- not that mud brown of Galveston. It's about the same distance from Houston so not much more driving involved.
