Finding the perfect spot

I'm ready to scope out some new shooting ground in west Houston. As I do so, i'm curious how to go about finding and gaining access to really great backdrops for portraits. I imagine its the introvert in me, but I find it extremely awkward to just park on the side of the road and just start shooting. I've not been on this type of shoot, but is this the way its done?

Most times, yes, plenty of the photographers will just find a great spot and start shooting. On some occasions, a photographer will be asked to leave, and you politely go about your way. On other occasions, a photographer is left alone as long as you are not damaging a sight or seem overly suspicious.

Usually if the property says "Private" or you are trying to shoot inside a particular place, like a Hotel. Then you would of course take the steps in asking for permission to photograph on the property.
