Houston Zoo - 10-30-2008, 11:13 PM

Name: Houston Zoo
Location: 1513 N. MacGregor (in Hermann Park).
Google Map location (map actually shows side entrance - use the entrance near the lake for better parking.
Website: HoustonZoo.org
About: Great Zoo - special kids area, primate area, and more. An African area is under construction
Photog Friendly: Very photo friendly, and they allow tripods.

This is a great place to go, especially if you invest in one of their season passes (I've had one for the past couple of years). Pass holders also get private showings and early entrance (8 am) the first Saturday of each month.
Favourite time to go: Sunday Mornings - Show up at gate opening (9 am), and you'll find them feeding many of the critters, still cool in the summer, and no crowds until about 11 am.

Back in July, A friend got special dispensation for four of us to get in on a Friday morning at 8. Turns out there wasn't that much animal activity, but we got several hundred shots each. We picked our favorites and sent them to the group leader, who put them in a My Publisher book. He gave a copy to the lady who got us in, and she was so impressed that she got our permission to order more books to use as gifts for donors.

Just after I shot the tiger picture, I heard Life Flight landing, and ran around to get a picture, which I missed. When I got back to the tiger, Ken Berntsen had gotten a great shot of the tiger swimming. I guess I should have stayed focused.

Sadly, there are dozens of Life Flight landings and take-offs a day. Jammu and Pandu, however, only swim once or twice a day...except on really cold days.

Nice shot of Jammu, by the way.

Dale, thanks. The book I spoke of will also be available in the gift shop. Jammu was not very cooperative, and I don't blame him, it was a muggy July day. If I had only known he was heading to the water.
