Question Indoor Portrait Locations? - 12-11-2008, 01:53 PM

I'm an amateur photographer, and my company caught me off guard one day and got me to agree to offer a photo session as a door prize for our holiday company party last weekend. The winners asked me yesterday to do a candid-style portrait shoot of their family this weekend so that they can be used as Christmas cards and presents. Given the cold snap, I'm scrambling trying to come up with last-minute indoor portrait venues.

I'm considering our office space (darn it, they got me into this! and it's lovely, though a little chrome-and-concrete for a family portrait), and the Butterfly Center at the Museum of Natural History (going to call to make sure they're okay with it), but neither is ideal. I'd rather not have to make the family pay admission.

Does anybody have any ideas? Or a weather machine? Thanks in advance for any recommendations.

Rent a Studio!! Or do it outside in sweaters or other appropriate attire.

The temperatures are suppose to be pleasant in Houston this weekend. You should be able to do an outdoor session. Depending on your location, I believe Hermann Park (Museum District) and Jones Park Plaza (downtown near Hard Rock Cafe/Jones Hall) are decorated for the season. If you willing to travel north, Market Street in The Woodlands is also currently decorated. All are photography friendly & free (except the Japanese Garden-permit required).

The weekend Houston weather forecast is for the seventies so the cold snap should not be a factor. However, for a family Christmas card what is more appropriate than in their home or in front of it? Or at the city Christmas tree at City Hall, the lights at Herman Park, the overlook at UH Downtown with the skyline in the background, along Allen Parkway, The Sabine Street Bridge, the Museum district, In front of the Worthen or Jones hall if that is a family interest, a couple hundred parks, the Japanese Gardens, dozens of fountains, several sports facilities, two arboretums and that is just the tip. Houston has many great places for a family Christmas card shot, most are free, that says hometown. Surely you can find one that ties to their interests.
