I know the spot well: Richmond, on Calhoun along the south side of the tracks just west of the river bridge between 2nd and 3rd Streets. The door faces the tracks. Across 3rd Street is the recently-burned Lone Star Bar and Grill.

See? Hanging around railroad tracks has some benefits.....

btw, if you visit there, do NOT park along the track-side of the street.

Thank you Ken! I'm still not exactly sure where that is on Richmond. I can't find a listing for Lone Star Bar and Grill. Is that near HCE? Thanks for hanging out on the tracks. ;-)

It is in Richmond, Texas, not on Richmond Avenue.

I believe KenW is referring to Richmond, Tx. zip 77469. Google maps is how I traced it down with the help from the screenshot above noting Richmond in the star at the bottom of it.

In Richmond, the RR bridge is a good backdrop as long as you stay off the tracks. Not sure how it rates on your "cool" scale, tho... Seriously, trains move at 60+mph and don't sound the horn until they are ON the bridge. A field at Morton St / 2nd St will give a good view of the bridge as a backdrop and is on the sun-side. The west end at 2nd St is a tougher shoot without as much room to work with while remaining clear of the tracks. The east end of the bridge is inaccessible without serious trespassing so don't.

There is some city property on the north side of the bridge that you MIGHT use to get the bridge supports in view, but the sun angle will always be bad. (and if you get on the tracks, the local cops will get all over you. Like stink on poop.)

Those buildings in the original post are on Calhoun between 2nd and 3rd St. Always shady. In more ways than one....If you work at it the water tower can be in the background. But way up high.....

Around the block on Morton St are many occupied businesses, much more attractive but perhaps not as amenable to sidewalks being blocks by posing subjects. I never asked so I can't say either way for sure....it's a friendly place so ask.

The courthouse in Richmond is very photogenic and probably quiet on weekends. Weekdays it is hustle-bustle so avoid then. Across the street (90A) from the courthouse is an historic home/museum, they may have some potential tho again I've never inquired.

Yes, Wayne, Lone Star burned to the ground. It is being rebuilt, apparently larger and probably with less character....

What I got isn't so good. Better than nothing. My first roll of Velvia 50 in the Pentax. I better dust them off and see if I have anything worth keeping.

the original post is a bit dated, so the pics may not be on the external site where they originally posted them anymore.
