Good place for sunset photos in/around Houston? - 01-13-2009, 05:59 PM

I was raised here in Houston, but spent most of my adult life in California. One of the things I miss most about CA was the sunsets. Either at the coast, or up in the mountains, sunsets were relatively easy to catch. But here in Houston, I haven't been able to find any locales where I can actually set up a tripod and fire away. Because Houston's so flat, elevation is just about a necessity, it seems. Somehow I don't think the Metro folks would take too kindly to my stopping my car along the ramp connecting I-10 to the Tollway and setting my gear up on the shoulder, so that's out. And I don't know anybody in a west-facing office tower who might be willing to invite me up, so that's a big no-go as well.

There's bound to be some place around here where a person can take decent sunset photos, though.

Best,

Michael

I live on the East side of Lake Houston (NE Harris County), and shot a few last Friday across the lake. Nothing real impressive, but here's a link to them so you can see the local.

Very nice, Jerry. A bit of a long haul for me -- I live over on the west side, but still, it might be worth it making the trip out to the lake to capture a shot from such a vantage point.

Best,

Michael

Check out the park near Sugarland Airport on hwy 6 - lake with observation tower (looking out of the tower west looks over the lake) - might be good.

Also if you are up for a little travel -Katy Prairie (Katy Hockley road area) - this time of year you might even get duck/geese flocks settling in for the night.
And Brazos Bend State Park - plenty of lakes and trees to have good shots with.

Thanks for this as well. I'll add it to my list of sites.

Jerry,

I like your photo's. One of the things I would suggest is to make sure the horizon is flat. In most of the photos at the beginning, the horizon is tilted and takes away from the image.

For a good shot of the Houston skyline, try the Quittman Street Bridge over I-45, just north of the I-10 Interchange. Get there early on cool clear winter evenings to get the best light as the sun goes down. Winter is best because the air is drier. You will want to set up on the bridge. There is a walkway. But the traffic can still be a little intimidating. And long exposures can be a problem because of vibration even with a very good tripod.

Katy Prairie. West on FM 529 and wander around. Of course it depends on the day as always. Bear Creek Park has some wide open spaces where you can see the sun hit the horizon. George Bush Park.

I've actually gotten some interesting shots on the beach at Galveston. Might be worth the trip for you sometime.

You might also consider a non-conventional shot, like the sunset reflected on a big, shiny building.

Sunrises and sunsets don't have to require elevation to make a good shot. You need to be creative and go out looking for good ones.
I have several recent ones that were all taken from ground level.

Brazos Bend State Park is a very nice place for some good sunset photo's. Also is fun as there are tons of trails and great wildlife.

Once it gets back on its feet and recovered, the Texas City dike gives a nice sunset over water.
