Cityscape/ Rooftops? - 01-31-2009, 04:11 PM

Does anyone know where I can go to get great shots on top of a roof in downtown? I was thinking the top floor of a parking garage somewhere. But, I just wanted to see if maybe there's a rooftop of a building that I can get to. I won't have a problem if I had to call the security of the building before hand and make sure it's okay. I just don't know which buildings would even let me do that.

Parking garages have been mentioned. Somebody will know the exact ones. My guess is that you would need somebody who works in a building to pave the way to the roof. Once on the roof, you may not be able to get high enough to see anything. Meaning a high wall around the top of the roof.

Yes, you'll need to "know somebody" to get on a downtown roof. Access is locked/restricted for security and safety reasons (the wind is very strong on top).

When I was downtown recently, I did notice at least one hotel-The Icon I think-had a rooftop pool & patio area. You might have to rent a room, but you could get on the roof. You would still be looking up at the taller buildings, but it would be different than being on the ground.

Hilton hotel downtown has a pool on like the 25th floor on the Toyota center side. No not rooftop but it is very open to seeing downtown from above? Patio is open air and very windy..

Just an Idea.

The hotel youre thinking of isnt the Icon, it is the Magnolia. Took a few shots there last weekend, but didnt have the ISO set right and got way too much light in them. We were staying at the hotel, not sure what their policy is for just using the rooftop to shoot.

Alsp, try thr 60th floor of the JP Morgan Chase tower. It is open to the public during business hours, (M-F, 9-6) but not sure about its status after Ike went through.

if you take 610 past the galleria and exit bellaire, take a right, about 2 blocks down there is a 4 story parking garage. Its tall enough to see back towords the galleria area. I used to work in one of those buildings is the only reason I know its there.

I have been wanting a shot like the one above and I have quite a few times considered stopping on the freeway on the shoulder and taking pics, but I dont feel very safe though.

can you just go to hilton downtown and head straight to the pool area at 25th floor without being asked by security? i assume everyone who enters the hotel will be most likely asked, correct?

I would assume that you could go there unchallenged, but that a room key would be required for entry.
