Coming To Houston- Any Recommendations for a location? - 02-18-2009, 08:12 PM

Hi there

I am a Dallas photographer and I will be visiting Houston to shoot my best friend's kiddo and her friends' kids. Most of the kids are toddlers.

I am looking for a great outdoor location with great lighting (SHADE) bc some of the sessions will be when the sun is brighter.

I guess if there is ONE location that Houston is known for- what would it be?

Like for Dallas it would be the Dallas Arboretum, but I would like something a little bit "different" if possible that the arboretum.

THANK YOU_ Andrea

OH- one more thing. Most of these families live near Rice University. I dont want to venture too far from this area (if possible)

Also Rice itself is nice, but you need a permit (and technically you need a permit in Hermann Park too and any municipal parks now)

OK- THANKS for the information.

Do you have any examples of a session in this area?

I guess I will just need to check it out in advance.

THANKS

Wait, really? I've clearly been out of the loop. Where can I see the Hermann Park (and other municipal park) permits?

You only need a permit for Hermann park if your shooting professionally, as in for profit. If your just taking photos of your best friends kids you shouldnt need a permit.

Permits are $115.

kiddos = children?

Should we shoot the job for you and post the photos on our blogs?

What's a blog?

Hermann Park has...

Small train for the kids
Ponds with ducks for the kids
Japanese garden with lots of nice places to photograph the kids
The park is across Main Street from Rice.

A little imagination will go a long way.

Here you go.............

thanks Wayne

And I was just trying to do some research before I come to Houston, since I dont live there and know NOTHING about the different locations in Houston.

I am going down the afternoon before to check out the location and see what I can find.

Really- you use imagination - just kidding

Andrea,

The park is huge. I think the area around the Japanese Garden-Train Bridge-Paddle Boat Dock would be great. I also think that if you strolled around the Rice campus with the kidlets and just happened to take a few pictures nobody would hassle you. If you bring a bunch of lights & umbrellas & reflectors, all bets are off.

The Houston Photography Permit is news to me. I drop the wife off to shop and go shooting about once a month. Ok, sometimes I just go to Camera Exchange and Frys. ;)

Not sure I would need to get a permit...not doing any portraits over there, but I would like to know the rules as far as usage of the photos taken in public places like for calendars, stock photography, personal contests (submitting them to like Pop Photo or other national contests, etc.). IOW, do we have the right to use our picture for anything other than our own "screen savers" as some gardens like to put it?

I searched here: http://74.125.95.132/search?q=cache:...ient=firefox-a but came up empty. Anybody have any written or a website about the permit and the rules, etc.?

Thanks!

Andrea, I would suggest heading over to Flickr to search for Hermann Park photos. You can do a tag search for a variety of keywords and you should be able to see some examples. I tried "Hermann Park" and portrait together and got about 160 results. You can probably get different results playing around with the tags, just keep Hermann Park in quotes.

Good luck.
