28th ANNUAL JURIED MEMBERSHIP EXHIBITION

Houston, TX – Houston Center for Photography announces its 28th Annual Juried Membership Exhibition. This year’s juror is Hannah Frieser, Director of Light Work in Syracuse, New York. The exhibition of selected works will be on display in HCP's galleries from July 9 – August 22, 2010 with an opening reception on Friday, July 9 from 6-8 p.m.

HCP's Juried Membership exhibition has been a celebrated tradition since the organization began in 1981. Each year a well renowned curator, writer or artist is selected to review hundreds of submissions and jury a final selection of photographs and/or video to be featured in the summer exhibition. The exhibition gives members of HCP the opportunity to exhibit their work alongside other members. The exhibition increases selected artists' exposure to a broader audience through the 8 week exhibition period and HCP’s online gallery. In addition, all submissions are retained in HCP’s database and are regularly referenced for future exhibition and publication consideration.


ABOUT THE JUROR
Hannah Frieser is the director of Light Work, a non-profit organization in Syracuse, NY, that has supported artists working in photography and related media for over thirty-five years. Light Work’s programs include exhibitions, residencies, publications and a public-access work space. Hannah has curated exhibitions on emerging and under-represented photographers such as Pipo Nguyen-duy, Kanako Sasaki, Suzanne Opton, Ben Gest, Beatrix Reinhardt, Barry Anderson and Rachel Herman. Her essays have been printed in photography publications and exhibition catalogues such as Contact Sheet and Nueva Luz. She has reviewed portfolios for Photo Lucida, FotoFest, the Society for Photographic Education (SPE), En Foco, Rhubarb Rhubarb, and more. She has served on review panels for the New York State Council on the Arts, on the board of directors for SPE, and juried competitions such as the Photographer’s Fellowship for the Center for Photography at Woodstock. In March 2010, she will be co-chairing an SPE national conference with Miriam Romais from En Foco. The conference “Facing Diversity: Leveling the Playing Field in the Photographic Arts” will take place in Philadelphia.
