Do you want full frame or will a 1.6 crop suit you? If you consider yourself a skilled photographer, the new Canon 50D is a quality crop body. We're getting one for the wife in another couple of months. The 40D is a great camera as well, and prices are dropping with the new 50D out. If you want full frame, the Canon 5D classic costs about the same as a 50D--the 5D mark II just came out, and those are running north of $3,000, so the 5D classic is a bargain at a third of the price.

If your skills are more intermediate, then the Rebel XSi (or even the older XTi) is an excellent choice as well. Note that the XSi takes SD memory cards, whereas all of the others use CF cards.

What do you plan on using your camera for?

Great info Jayme..

Yeah there are a lot of different options when it comes to these new fangled digital SLR's.. hehe...

Options are (priced low to high):
Canon Rebel XSI (1.6x Crop Body) - LINK HERE
Canon 50d (1.6x Crop Body) - LINK HERE
Canon 5d mkII (Full Frame Body) - LINK HERE
Canon 1d mkIII (1.3x Crop Body) - LINK HERE
Canon 1ds MkIII (Full Frame Body) - LINK HERE

Lemme dig up a good link to explain the crop body versus full frame issue in case youre not familiar with the terminology...

You might consider other than Canon esp if you dont have Canon lenes {ie Sony}.

I hav Canon L Glass ... so I went new 5D classic. Its the best FF camera value out there.

Canon has apparently had QC problems with focus and logic on newer cameras
See those threads on 5D II banding black spot and 1D 1DS retro focus, AI logic, mis focus...

Medium Format is my money camera for high profile clients.

Canon, Sony, Nikon, they are all the same. Just reach to your pocket and buy one.
