Meetup Jan 2010 Film Crawl. Planning post. - 12-08-2009, 12:45 AM

It's long past time for another film crawl! As the rest of December to too soon or too close to Christmas lets try for Janurary.

The poll lists all the weekend days in Janurary. Select ALL the days that you can make a film crawl.

Post recomendations for locations and places for lunch to this thread. If someone has posted a location recomendation you like put up a post saying so. In a couple of weeks I will post a poll with some of the gropup favorites.

FAQ:
1.) What is a Film Crawl? Film Crawls are about a group of photographers getting togeather to photograph one or more locations at a slow easy pace.

2.) Can I come if I don't have a film camera? / Can I bring a digital camera? YES. I encourage you to come. If you are a digital photographer who is the least bit curious about film photography, this is a great way to get to learn some of the basics, check out the equipment, and get advise about starting with film.

Lee. IMHO I think that if we had a Film Crawl the same time each Month that we may develop (no pun intended) a following.

I picked a few dates, but am guessing really. In general, Saturdays are better for me. If the date works out, and we are in shooting in my general area, we would be glad to host dinner again! Maybe a bonfire too? Hey, we have some great fireworks as well!

Greg
I started instigating Film Crawls every other month with a dinner GTG for the months inbetween early this year. Unfortunately work & 'the need to finance my food and shelter habit' got in the way this summer. I'm going to be trying for roughly the same schedule this year. If anyone else wants to speed up or slow down the pace please pipe up. I'm certainly open to suggestions.

I've heard you get a good deal on fire works. However, the combination of my typical New Years Eve debauchary, fire works AND cameras might take a long time to live down.

i'm only available saturdays. and not the 9th b/c of a lame bridal show.

did valerie say party?! we have some fireworks to light (artillery shells), so the fete up there would be cool.

i think greg's suggestion is an excellent one. like the 2nd saturday every month we crawl.

I'm all for this. But I can't help but think a monthly get-together might grow in popularity more if its open to photography in general.

Then again, I just like the sound of "film crawl," so perhaps that's what we should call it, but encourage anyone's attendance. Inclusive rather than exclusive.

If we do this, we should decide on a regular spot for a rendezvous point, preferably a restaurant with decent food at decent prices.

In that respect, my vote is for Jax Grill. It's centrally located on Shepherd/Durham just south of I-10. They have a big covered outdoor patio area that's a nice place to kick back and relax when the weather's nice. Plus their Chicken Fried Steak is really good

Oh, almost forgot. My weekend schedule for next month is wide open so far. So I voted for every Saturday and Sunday.

As well as those who shoot digital, but do so more slowly than the average LF film shooter.

I have standing commitments the first and third Saturdays of each month. In a pinch, I can reschedule the first Saturday. Other than that, I'm usually open all other Saturdays and Sundays, especially if we start early.

I'm still wanting to do a Navasota/Washington-on-the Brazos/Independence crawl, and I'm still wanting to do Huntsville. There are so many places around that I've driven past over the years with no thought of photographing, but in my old age and new take-it-a-little-easier-and-stop-and-smell-the-roses philosophy, I'll go pretty much anywhere.

I don't know, you whip those Pano's out pretty quick.

But I will amend my statement.

One of the parts I enjoy about film crawls photographing someone elses favorite spot. Our first Crawl was at my favorite spot the Japanese Garden in Hermann park. Our second Crawl was a cemetary suggested by someone else. Our last attempt at a Film Crawl was for Navisota and Washington on the Brazos state park. With this variety meeting at locations convient to the destination seems to work better.

As for restraunts good food and beer at moderate prices are a must!

Meeting at the same restaurant every month also kind of rules out early morning shoots. If the crawls are more about shooting than eating, you want to get out there when the light is good.

Once I'm set up, firing off the sequence for a pano is pretty quick. I just seem to recall you guys waiting on me more than the other away around.
