There is a short and sweet DVD by Bobbi Lane that's very good with explaining the "right" way lighting is done and it's only $25
Calumet Portrait Lighting Techniques with Bobbi Lane DVD - CE9907 - CE9907 . By right way, I mean more by the book - using monolights, lightmeter, etc. but the concepts are the same.
The strobist site is good too but take it with a grain of salt. Originally it was started on the idea of opening up off camera lighting to mere mortals using old flashes and DIY things. Once it became very popular, some people treat it and David Hobby (the guy who started it) like a religion and the second coming of Jesus and people went out and bought every old flash they could find doubling or even tripling their prices. The strobist flickr group especially has turned into a huge gear lust site where many just do things because they can and not really because it's the most effective way.
If you're using Nikon's CLS system, Joe McNally's videos and books are great, but again, take his advice with a grain of salt too since Nikon pays for him to promote their gear. and not everybody has 17 SB-800's available at a shoot.
But yeah, just get out and shoot...
