I did a shoot there for some girls last year and we didn't have any trouble.

I was taking some night time shots around the river walk area a while back of some of the sculptures and was approached by one night guard informing me that it was ok for me to photo the art, but not the building next to it.

Does ask me why, I didn't inquire. I just politely complied and went along my way.
I can only presume that property owners or whomever have instructed the security personnel to keep out photogs when they see them.

At Kelby's Photowalk last year someone approached me and just said I needed to check in. Where I don't know but since I mentioned I was with the group she acknowledged that I was ok.

one of the buildings up there has apparently been a thorn in many photographers sides. I have never shot there so I can't relate a personal experience, but apparently it's fairly easy to accidentally end up on their private property and their security takes their job very seriously.

That said, private property is private and should be respected as such.

Update: I shot there last Saturday (mind you the triathlon was going on so there were a ton of people taking pictures) but didn't have anyone approach me...

I shot there once here and there and I had no problem as well. I would just try it out. If you get questioned there are other places you can use as an alternative.

Yeah, that sounds right.

Don't get me wrong or anything, the night guard was polite and non-confrontational. She simply asked that I don't photo the building itself so I complied. I didn't care about the building anyway and frankly I was on private property so its their rules.

They take themselves way to seriously and either need to put up signs and fences or accept the intrusions.

Their security department management should head down to Terry Hershey Park to see how it's done there.

I was shooting around that area close to this time last year. I was shooting in the direction of the building, but I had the building cropped out of my photo. A security guy came and told me I couldn't shoot the building. When I said that the building wasn't in the shot, he told me I couldn't shoot in that direction no matter what...even if the building wasn't in the shot. We just said okay and went on our way.

FWIW, I was at Market Square last weekend assisting with a shoot. All we had to do was sign in with the concierge and we were cleared to shoot around the area. Note that the area in question is around where all the shops are located such as the Borders, Eddie Bower, HEB market etc.

Just FYI.

if you are on public property, you may shoot whatever you like. what you can do with it afterwards is a different story.

as long as you are standing on public property, fire away in whatever direction you would like. if they have a problem with it, they can call the police.

i don't understand building a massive building in suburb that sticks out like a sore thumb and then not wanting people to take pictures of it. but, that's their prerogative.

He was just trying to nip potential problems in the bud.

I agree with you completely. I was at the Williams waterwall last weekend and after being there for 10 minutes, a security guard came up to me. He was very polite, but he was there to enforce the building's rules. #1 No Commercial photography. No problem, I am not a commercial photographer. #2 NO TRIPODS. Why I ask? They are used by commercial photographers. See my answer to #1. #3 No Pictures of the Williams Tower. Why I ask? There are pictures of the building all over the internet. He says, since 9/11, the building is afraid of terrorists. But I'm a Photographer, not a Terrorist! Then I ask a practical question. The building is the tallest structure in the Galleria. How are you going to stop people from taking pictures of it from across the street? or the Galleria parking garage?

At this point, the guard just looks at me and says, he agrees with me and that he does not want to hassle me. However, he says we are being recorded by the security cameras and if he did not come out here and hassle me, he would be reprimanded by his boss. So I packed up my stuff and left. I did ask him one other question. Why is the waterwall not operating at night anymore? He says, because people show up. I then I leave him with one last question. So, then why build it?
