Public school safety!!! - 06-02-2010, 03:25 PM

I just wanted to share with you guys something crazy that happened to my son at his school. OMG you would not believe how the school acted in regards to an injured child. It is an EYE OPENER when your child is hurt at school because the school cut a corner on doing the right type of preventative measures. My son ran full speed into a rope tied to some trees on his playground area. I am speachless with how the school reacted.

Wow that looks like it hurts. May I ask which Cy-Fair school? PM if you don't want to put it out in the public.

I'm curious why the rope was tied between the trees too, was it rope to keep the tree straight or something?

I really hope your son doesn't endure too much pain and discomfort, and that the rope burns and bruising heal up quickly.

We had one of our trainers driving the gator (gas powered utility golf cart with a small stuck bed) late one night and she ran neck-on into a retaining wire - I know some landscapers will use fluorescent rope for this exact purpose too.

My son does not live in the greater Houston area. He attends a public school in Rockport. But I learned a few things about how schools are exempt from any liability for harm to a child. Or so they said. My son is well but will have a scar all the way accross his neck because of the rope. They put it up to detour children from running between some trees at recess. It was a single white nylon rope at neck height to a 10 year old.

When the school was presented with medical bill concerns they claimed to be exempt form all responsibility and simply said sorry.

Oh the story gets way worse but I just wanted to bring some thought about for next years go round. The children at my son's school including him ran the same area for almost the entire year and then one day a few weeks before school is out they throw this rope around some trees. By the time I got someone over there to get pictures of the rope it was GONE. Shaddy stuff. Grrrrrr. It is now complex as it can get with the school and out of my hands. Just keep your children mindful of the dangers all around us. My son was lucky says the ER nurse. He could have died.

I learned schools don't have to follow standard safety guidelines like the rest of the working world and that flagged ropes are not required. Osha does not have a hand in regulating safety at a PUBLIC school. Grrrrrr Well My fight is all up hill but I plan on doing all in my power to make some new rules. I don't want to see a child die before a mother and father have to go through worse than me.

Keith, show these photos to your TV station to see if they would want to run your story.
