Anyone want to help a newbie? - 01-25-2011, 07:44 PM

Hi All,

I'm still really new to the photography world and have a ton to learn. I was wondering if anyone in Houston had a studio and would be willing to explain to me the set-up.. Basically what goes where, how to get it all up and working..

I was thinking about renting a set up, but of course want to know what to do before I get it, and what exactly I need to rent.

If anyone would be willing to spare an hour or so, it would be greatly appreciated. I know I'm asking a lot!

Thanks!

I can. What exactly are you looking to learn. For studio stuff, there are TONS of variables, so different things will work in different ways.

I wouldn't rent a setup.

My best suggestion would be to go through Strobist and read that. There is a Lighting 101 workthrough on there that will teach you everything, but with small speedlights. Everything you do with speedlights will translate over to big studio lights.

Thank you Thomas! I will definitely check that website out!

Basically (and please excuse my absolute lack of knowledge), I would like to learn about using the wireless transmitters, using both speedlights and the big studio lights, etc. I've been trying to read some about it, but I'm really a "hands-on" person.

Sadly, I took a class about studio lighting, but all it ended up being was "here, put this here and shoot this person".

Strobist: Lighting 101

Yep. This is where you should start.

One good source if you're visual (as you should be!) is YouTube. Adorama TV has some nice introductory video training clips with Mark Wallace. Or just search for portrait lighting and you'll got plenty of videos.
