Dark Room design [help] - 04-22-2005, 02:00 PM

I am calling on you fine people to help me design the layout of my darkroom.
I have framed, insuated and sheetrocked my dark room, sacraficing part of my garage fro my art. However, since I have never built one before, I am calling on people who have spent plenty of time in one to help me design the layout of mine. It is by no means huge, but the size should be adequate for one person (maybe two in a pinch) to get their developing done.

Here are your constraints & site details:
The long wall will be where the plumbing runs.
Fresh air will come in from the left most wall.
My enlarger is HUGE. 2.5' wide * 3.5' deep * 6.5' high.
The ceiling is low on the left side so my garage door will still open.
I'm thinking the work surface will only need to be about 18" deep.
There will be a sink.

So, using the fairly to scale drawing below, help me out, please.

And for the selfish: I'll loan the space to anyone who asks nice enough, as long as you promise to not break anything.

I haven't been in a dark room in 30 years, but what I did when I made mine was bought a kitchen cabinet form the surplus center and use it. It worked out very well, I had places to store my bottles and supplies.

I think that 18 inches would be awful narrow, a stand counter top is like 25 I believe. With a 25 incher you would still have almost 3 ft behind you.

I do know that after I got it done I went in with a radio and a nice chair and set there for about an hour to let my eyes get accustom to the dark, then looked around and found some places that light was coming in that I had no idea it could.

Looking at your design from the creative side it looks like a 70's Chevy pick up truck with one door open! LOL

My Ideal humble dark room would be one that I can take with me to the coffee shop...like a Toshiba or Dell Pentium4 3.2GZ 100MB with at least 1Gig Ram Wi-Fi USB 2.0 and fire wire conections and multi card reader port with DVD/RW Combo Adobe suite and Super bright screen wide angle Laptop....is that too much to ask...see, I did not even go for the G4 Laptop, I would settle for the above said !

OOOOPPPSSS ! ! ! sorry I wasn't any help...just could not help myself LOL
