Shooting Times - 04-13-2008, 09:21 AM

I see people shooting at Wortham Theater, Sabine Street, Cy-Fair CC, UH Cinco Ranch, and other places around town that seem like "high traffic" areas. When is a good time to shoot at these locales without being harassed by security or such?

It's a bit worrisome for me (noob) to setup my lighting and camera gear to a location then have to pack it all up because "the man" said so, before getting started.

What I don't understand is why would you think you have a right to shoot at these places at any time? Aren't most of these private property?

Someone must think it is not a good idea for you to be allowed to do this and therefore sends "the man" to enforce their beliefs.

I don't and that's why I'm a bit worrisome about going to some of these locations, but images from these locations pop-up here and on other sites with some regularity.

I'm assuming you are talking about shooting outside and not actually inside any of these places? Sabine Street is a public road that is well known as a place for shooting the skyline. I don't think I've ever heard of anyone being hassled there, being a public street and all.
The only public street I've ever had a problem on is Main Street, and that's because of the Metro Rail line. Big NO NO. A group I shoot with were downtown and happened to be crossing Main. Some stopped to shoot the Rail as it was coming into the station, and Metro Police was there within seconds. After they quized us for about 5 minutes, I guess they determined we were who we said we were. Although, we did see them ever fifteen minutes or so after that...

As for the others, such as Wortham, Lone Star College-Cy Fair, UH-Cinco Ranch, I'm sure they have a Public Relations department that you could contact for permission if you want to shoot on their property.

However, this brings up an interesting question. If you are on a public sidewalk or street, and shoot private property...

I do mean outside locations. Sabine Street is awfully close to a park now too though : throws hands up in the air :

Some of the locations are public, such as UH Cinco Ranch, which is a state-supported public university.

I have shot there several times, as well as along the also-public Willow Fork Nature Trail.

The only problems I ever ran into were a model was chastised by "Barney Fife" for taking up two parking spots, and when I pulled into the lot about a minute before the police arrived to check an unrelated building alarm.

An older shoot at UH Cinco Ranch:

A more recent shoot at Willow Fork, after I started using off-camera lighting:

Private universities such as Rice can restrict shooting as they see fit.

Thanks for the help - I'm noticing a lack of information about Willow Fork Trail - is there a parking lot anywhere nearby? Cinco Ranch has a lot of beautiful scenery, but is generally residents only.

Park at UH Cinco Ranch and walk south along Mason to reach Willow Fork.
