The idea of forming a group to further the use of Analog Photography deserves it's own discussion and we avoid the appearance of Thread Hijacking!

So, here's a repeat of what I said earlier....

Westley (TPF member wclavey) and I have been kicking the idea around for a few weeks. Very informal to the point of almost irreverent with serious overtones.

A&W standing for, but not limited to:

A&W root beer shops. One location kicked about for gatherings. Arby's & Whataburger could also work.
Adams & Weston. The ancestral fathers of the Idea.
Analog and Water. The darkroom component.

I do have one request: In keeping with the 19th & 20th Century nature of the work that we are trying to keep alive, may we refrain from calling this a SIG? It's a Group of folks with common methods, problems and goals who share their experiences freely with anyone.

Another thought while it's fresh: Digital is not a dirty word. Scanning and inkjet printing are an integral part of what Westley and I are doing. I'm sure others do the same.

I know Wes & I are interested. Steve (APUG user optique) in NW Houston may be interested as well. All are welcome. We'll figure out something for a first meeting. I'm guessing after the Holidays. I know folks are busy right now.

Wes & I are going to Longview on Saturday for the Ansel Adams exhibit of photographs. We plan to stop at the Texas State RR yard in Palestine Sunday afternoon on the way back to Houston. If anyone happens to be close to either place, give us a shout.

Is this a plan?

I'm usually in Houston about once a month, so I'd like to keep in touch so I could time my visit with your get together, if possible. We haven't had much luck with putting on get togethers around Austin. I've been to two in the last year, I organized one of them, and we had 3-5 people. But I got a lot of ribbing when loading up my Mamiya 6 with 120 film.

Film & Darkroom Folks - 12-04-2008, 04:37 PM

Wayne,
As I said in the other thread I am very interested in a darkroom group. After about thirty years I have just finished building another darkroom in my garage. Developing film is no problem but my printing talents are very limited. In other words I need all the help I can get. Please keep me posted as to when you plan to start this group.
Regards,
Phil

Phil,

Welcome to the Club! That would be the Club For Unskilled Printers. I haven't printed since the mid-70s. And I wasn't very good back then. I'm jealous. I wish I had a place to build a darkroom.

Tom,
We will definitely make every effort to accomodate our out-of-Houston friends.

This could be good.

Cool The First Time - 12-05-2008, 07:35 AM

Heck yes, Kevin! It will be good to see you again.

There hasn't been a first time, so next time will be the first time.

If everyone would start thinking about a date & place....

I seem to have more free time on the weekends that I am in Houston. Looking at the calendar, that means the weekends of Dec. 20-21 and Jan. 10-11 and 24-25.

Any weeknight is fine with me.

Location. Location. Location. So far, we have interest from folks in Katy, Tomball, San Antonio , I think Kevin is on the north/NW side of Houston, and I'm in Copperfield-Cypress (Hwy 6 & US-290). Someplace central to all of those places...La Grange?

I'm new here. Y'all know the area better than I do. Anybody have a suggestion?

Smacks his head hard! "Duh!"

A&W Root Beer! Of course! Where the heck is one?

Cool Correction & Apology to Tom - 12-05-2008, 10:31 AM

For some reason I thought Tom lived in San Antonio. He actually lives near Austin. Sorry, Tom.

When I'm in Houston, it's usually during the week, and I stay at a friends' home near W. Airport Rd. and Beltway 8, so don't worry about being convenient to Austin.

I was just thinking, maybe we can petition Abel into having our own "film" category in the Photography Information section. That way we could get together before ever having an actual GTG. I wonder if he's listening?

I hope Abel is paying attention. I also hope that he might join us. Abel has expressed an interest in the "nuts & bolts" of film processing.

I would like to join the group. I'm in Cypress and have a lot of darkroom stuff, but no way to set up here. I have had film developed elsewhere and printed at myself at school (I do a better job of printing than developing film). B & W in the real rather than gray-scaling digital is so superior, but as you have figured out, places to do this are a problem.

Please keep my info and keep in touch for future outings. BTW, we have a small A&W that is attached to a convenience store...seems to be the way to go these days.

Maggie
