Houston Rodeo Ride in on Memorial - 02-27-2009, 07:34 AM

Does anyone know what time they will be heading into downtown for the parade on Saturday? Thanks.

EDIT: I ask as I'm looking to get there before they get to the Waugh Bridge and stay till the last riders pass

Yep, saw that one along with this one, http://www.hlsr.com/et/prr/prr_dpr.aspx this has the time of when the parade starts. So, I'm thinking 7 or 8 at the waugh bridge should get some decent shots.

Last time I went (about 3 years ago), I hit Memorial (at Studemont - 1 bridge closer to DT than Waugh) about 1 1/2 hours before Parade start time.

Got lots of good shots of the riders, including alot of close ups. No one else was there.
It rained a bit (on and off) that day, so I also had some nice cover with the bridge.

Ok, the first group didnt start coming around till around the 830-9 timeframe. I parked over at the tinsley parking lot just east of the Federal Reserve Building and walked over towards Memorial Dr at the HPD Memorial. Camped there for an hour, watching the grass grow...not literally of course, but watched HPD and cars go up and down Memorial. Then it got quiet...no more cars for a good 15-30 mins. The trailriders committee setup camp at the temp parking off of memorial, right before the exit into downtown. We waited for another 30-45 mins, I got a bit bored and made a trek up memorial towards Studemont ON Memorial Dr since traffic has already been stopped.

I stayed there till the first group of riders past, then I 'quickly' made my way back to the Committee members and took photos of the next 2 set until it became stagnate. At this time, this was the last set of riders which stretched from the HPD memorial to the overpass for Studemont, this was at 1045 when I left.

Something to keep in mind, the Committee members want people off the streets as the riders come through.

Oh, almost forgot, I met several folks taking photos, one had a D3, another a D70/80, and a family with a Canon 300mm and 17-35mm(if im not mistaken)lenses.

Ken -

I was the one shooting the D3. Just downloaded my shots and there are one or two keepers. I will post a couple after I get the post processing done.

That is my favorite location for this ride in. No crowds, and everyone is moving slow, and they are open to posing for you. Here is one that I was able to get of a wonderful lady resting in the saddle ... and loving her land.

Enjoy.

Howard;

It was nice meeting you even if it was a brief moment.

This is one of the ones I like so far. As they say, the HLSR is for the kids.

Ken -

Well done. I caught a couple of shots of those young men as well. Something about them that spoke to the camera.

Well - I finished processing a few more, and I think there are a couple worth sharing. Flags , family pride and amazing details were there for the watchfuleye.I met some very nice folks out there, and as tired as they were, the riders were very accomodating for the few cameras that were out. I enjoyed meeting all of you out there.

Vaya con Dios.

Howard;

Great shot, if I'm not mistaken, that shot is only available at the beginning of the bridge heading east on memorial just after studemont.

Thanks, guys. Ken is right - We were actually back at the end of the line between the last two wagons while they were stopped in the lineup going into downtown. I loved the leading lines from the median taking the wagon train into the skyscrapers of Downtown Houston. We were somewhere on the bridge east of Studemont and west of the Police Memorial.
