For real digital IR, a lot of folks use a SLR converted for the purpose.

The internal hot-mirror filters (which block IR and UV light) on modern DSLR's keep getting stronger and stronger (which is a good thing for regular photography). As a result, taking IR pictures with any unmodified recent-model DSLR is likely to be a disappointment. Very little IR gets through to the sensor, so your exposures will be in seconds, maybe 10-15 seconds; and even then the results will not be so great.

The majority of IR shots you see on the web are probably taken with modified DSLR's that have had the hot-mirror removed and replaced with an internal IR filter that does the opposite of the hot-mirror, by blocking everything except infrared and near-infrared light. The advantage of this is much shorter exposure times, plus you don't have to use filter on the front of your lenses which means you can see and compose through the viewfinder without everything being extremely dim.

Shaun....as stated above...most people have converted there spare or old cameras...or like me bought older Dslr's to convert....some use converted PS cameras...which do a great job too...

I started with Nikon D100's....great cameras to shoot IR...and now have two Sony's a100/a200 that have been converted....since you shoot canon..you can find some decent deals on camera's people have converted...try ebay...or FM forum...and also here...

First...the pictures come out of the camera...like this....on auto AW or one of the preset WB from your camera...

Size: 56.2 KB

This is good for making B&W images just converting the image to B&W in your software...

The other images are had, by doing a Custom WB to green grass..this can be done...by you and your camera...have to read the manual....each camera is different...

The image out of the camera then looks like this...(depends on which conversion you do...665nm or 720nm or 850nm(B&W Conversion))

Size: 39.6 KB

Then you take the photo into PS or any other program where you can manipulate the color channels....and you can get images like this or better...

I would not convert your primary camera....get another Canon...to use..or a PS to do it with...there are several companies that can do the conversion...if you buy on off of eBay...make sure they have been doing it for a little while..the cannon camera's require someone with technical abilities to do...

Good Luck..and let us (TPF) know if we can help...

Oh these are all test shots that I use to make sure the camera's that I have work properly...they are not of anything perfect....
