Austin B/W IR Graffiti Art - 01-19-2010, 10:20 PM

My first post on this forum as well as my first real B/W IR photo. Shot with a Hoya R72 and converted with Silver Efex. Any constructive criticism would be greatly appreciated.

Rick,

First, Welcome to the site !!!

The photo is nice.

Are you on a calibrated monitor?

The photo fades to black on the right. The upper left is very dark also. Of course that could be your intention.

Overall it looks as if it could use a little contrast.

Those are just nit pics on a very nice photo.

The fade was intentional on the building as to not distract with the other graffiti pieces on the wall and to create somewhat a focal point. As far as the upper left...that was not the intention but I would imagine learning how to layer (which I have not at this point) in CS3 would give me the flexibility to project what I "see" much easier.

Rick..first off great shot....as far as the upper left....you might want to play with adding some light to that area...by using lighting effects....

Just highlight the whole image right click...and create layer copy.....then play with Lighting Effects and other PS functions...

Good Luck...

Hello and welcome. Nice image, I like it.

Here's my advice to adding some light to the left of the image in PS CS3.

In Layers Palette, add a levels adjustment layer. This will add a new adjustment layer for levels adjustment. In the layers palette for this new layer, you should have two small icons. One is the "Levels" icon (a wavy line I think) and the other is a white box. This is the layer mask. click the white box to make the mask active. Alternatiely, you can ALT-click the white box which will make the mask active -and- replace the main window with the contents of the mask. Now, activate the gradient fill tool. Then, go into your layer mask and add a black-white gradient with white on the left fading to black on the right. You can go back and forth between the layer adjustment and the mask -- it will take some trial and error. Eventually, you will get it to where you can adjust the levels (midpoint slider) up some and it should only have effect on the left of the image. It may take some fiddling around to get it right.

If this is not clear let me know.

Great shot! Welcome to the forums. I love the effect IR has on the scene.
