IR & Film - 03-25-2010, 04:01 PM

Anyone ever do any IR with normal 35mm B&W film? If so, do you just use an IR filter on the lens and capture like normal? Film and filter recommendations?

It's been a long time, but I think I used an Wratten 87 and a deep red like a Wratten 25. I remember that I focused visible light then moved that distance to the IR mark. Most modern lenses don't have an IR mark on them.

Thanks Don! Seems like a real pain. I'll just wait for my IR sensor to come in instead of messing around with filters and film.

You may still want to experiment with different filters. The results can be really dramatic.

Wil,

If I remember right, not only do you have to adjust the focus, the film must be loaded in complete darkness. It even comes in a container that blocks all light. Looks the same but different material.

I also remember that some cameras that have the window in the back where you can see the cartridge will allow IR light through.

You don't do IR with "normal" film. (Maybe that's not what you meant.) There is special infrared sensitive film. Then, yes, shot through proper filters and focused differently, etc.
