Useing a D70 - 03-30-2010, 09:58 PM

Does anyone in the Dallas or Fort Worth have a D70 with the IR convertion. I just got my working and have a few questions on adjusting the PRE white blance. I have been using the first shot on a green field.
I would like to spend a few hours with you.
Thanks hope to hear from you.
Marvin

Smile -2.0 Exposure Compensation - 03-31-2010, 09:27 AM

For some reason, to set a custom white balance in an IR-Converted Nikon D70, one must first change the exposure compensation to -2.0. After that, then under direct sunlight, photograph something that should be "white" in infrared (foliage, etc.).

I actually use different colored cards (e.g., green, red, blue) and fill the viewfinder with the card under sunlight and out of focus to obtain a custom white balance.

Experimentation is THE key to obtaining personally satisfying results in IR: experimentation in camera settings; experimentation in post processing steps. I have found little help in trying to duplicate another photog's approach in IR photography; there are just too many variables -- even when using the same model camera and the same strength IR filter.

Good luck. Post your progress for all to enjoy.

Bruce,

And after you set your WB you set the EV compensation back to 0 right?

Well, you should and thereafter use the histogram to adjust the EV, but too often I forget. Fortunately, landscape offers many second opportunities to get the settings adjusted.
