LiveView & Dust Delete Functions With IR - 03-25-2011, 06:08 PM

Critique: NC:

Does using LiveView for IR photography on a converted camera body make a significant difference in composing the photo? I should have my 30D back from Lifepixel this coming week and am somewhat wondering if a camera with LiveView would have been a better choice for IR. I have an opportunity to get another 50D fairly cheap but don't know if the added time & expense would be worth it.

Anyone know of a company that can reconnect the dust delete function after a conversion as well? With Lifepixel, it is disabled.

Extra pixels are nice but not really the driving factor - just the LiveView and possible Dust Delete function.

I have yet to convert a true DSLR with Liveview to IR (I've had a Nikon D5000 for over a year intending to...), but I've used a Sony F707 and a Canon Pro1 both converted to full spectrum for IR photography, which as "P&S" cameras have a "liveview." I've found for IR, particularly with regard to exposure and contrast, it's very convenient just to look at the lcd before the shot and make any settings adjustments. I can usually tell from the lcd alone which shots will be keepers.

My next IR camera - the aforementioned Nikon D5000 - will definitely have liveview and a tilting lcd (a definite need for my aging knees).

I have really been spoiled on the Live View of the 7D. It really has helped to settle on a good composition. Is the adjustment for exposure compensation pretty standard or will it vary wildly depending on the shot?
