IR at MFA Houston - 04-21-2011, 04:57 PM

Critique: NC:

One of my photos in the Coastal Prairies, Houston's Heartland exhibit is a near-IR of a controlled prairie burn. I made a small panel on the photo to explain near-IR digital photography.

The original photo included a man doing the burn in IR, but he looked "too scary." I submitted a color photo instead.

This is one of four panels in a big display about the Houston area prairie at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. The whole display will travel for the next year as an effort to educate the public about coastal prairies.

I believe this is the photo used in the display.

They are NOT some of the scary ones doing the burn!

Very nice work. Is there any particular advantage to using infrared photography for this kind of scene?

Besides the different look, near IR seems to cut through the smoke and haze.

I have also noticed a slight thermal image effect. I have some photos where I did not see any fire but the camera recorded flames.

Thanks for the comments.
