You can start out fairly simple with a Hoya R72 filter on your lens, then you shoot 20-30 second exposures in as direct a light as possible. This will usually allow you to get enough IR light to the sensor. Your stock sensor has an IR blocking filter, and some are stronger than others, which is why you need the long exposure. Some are so strong even 30 sec exposures cannot get enough IR light in.
You can also convert a camera like several of us have. They change the glass over the sensor to glass similar to the R72, which blocks visible light but allows IR to pass. This allows you to shoot normal shutter speeds and have normal AF function.
