Sony W7

This is a discussion on Sony W7 within the Infrared forums, part of the Showcase category; i have an old dsc-w7. Would it be possible to convert to IR? Would it work ok as IR? Thanks...

Most anything can be converted. My concern would be the lack of RAW support. RAW helps a lot to make your IRs into what you envision. I'd say 95% or so of mine are tweaked when they come out of the camera. You could still tweak the JPGs, but not as easily or effectively.

Neither MaxMax nor LifePixel, the two major IR converters, list the Sony DSC-W7 as one of the cameras they typically convert, so there may be difficulties with this particular model. And, once you're going the larger investment route, as Keith said, you'll want a camera which can take RAW photos -- a real help in the challenging post processing workflows intrinsic to IR files.

i found a place that will convert it for $110 to 720. Albeit, on Ebay (the seller of the service does have 100% rating though).

Advantages - cheaper then filters, faster shutter speeds - have a wide angle adapter and zoom adapter for it (very small footprint)

Disadvantages - No RAW, No custom WB

Man, decisions, decisions...

Just when I thought I had decided to go with 77mm 720 filters for both my DSLRs and my G11 I see this and think, here is a way to give new life to a camera in retirement :)

You can usually resell the IR filters fairly easily if you try those first.
