Michael, I agree with you about Gettysburg - - it was a much more meaningful trip when I went there with a Civil War battle historian than just to wander around the park.
I have wanted to go back to Windsor Ruins for a while now... but it is a full 8 hr drive from Houston and if I were going that far and that far back, which, realistically you could do in a weekend, I would want to stay somewhere to explore a bit more... at leas a full day in the Vicksburg area or see a few other plantation homes - - something like that.
We saw the ruins as part of a trip to Baltimore one Thanksgiving week... it was great! You can see from the picture I posted above that the leaves were starting to fall from the trees. We were there on a Sunday morning and had the place to ourselves for about 3-4 hours before anyone else came along. We stayed in Vicksburg the night before. If we were not on the road with a schedule we had to meet, I would have stayed another day or 2, at least, in that area. But we only had one 4-hour window on that trip for photography and Windsor Ruins was it.

I welcome comments on any picture I post... Thanks. Tripod - (n., archaic.) 1. Image stabilization
