Welcome Patrick ... enjoy the D5000 ... I haven't touched one of those, but I would assume it's like the D40 and D60.

Good Start into the world of SLR.

I read the specs on the D5000 and it's the D90 minus a few features. Same sensor and all that.

You might want to look at the d90 again.. sorry to make you have doubts. But the extra features are ones that you can grow with. I'd give up the kit lens and get a d90 with a 35mm lens. It just depends on where you see yourself going with this mess. If you think you might get into it more, go d90 else the 5000 will work.

It is something I will be sticking with. I was set on the 5000 because I liked the movie mode, the flip-out LCD, and the price point. Also when I researched the camera, it was very similar to the D90.

Is there a comparison article for the D90 & D5000?

People either love or hate Ken, but here...
Nikon D5000

The BIGGEST issues i see are.
1. No commander flash... if you decide you want to do some cool off camera flash stuff you will not be able to do it with the popup commander on this camera. you will be forced to buy two flashes, 1 commander and one slave. The d90 enables you to use the camera as the commander.
2. older lenses will not work. The old 50 1.4 and the 35-70 2.8 are great lenses and you wont be able to use them. You will only be able to use brand new G lenses.

Still you will be happy with the d5000 i think. Just thought i would bring up the d90 AGAIN.

Camera Coop is a great camera store on Durham, just south of Washington Ave. I'm not into digital but they have a lot of Nikon gear there.
