Howdy, from Bellaire, Texas! - 07-05-2011, 05:01 AM

Hello to the forum! I was browsing through dpreview.com, when I saw mention of this place, really liked the local aspect, and decided to join. (I have not joined dpreview; just not my cup of tea, though it can be useful browsing there for information.)

Is "photocop" a word? I wear a badge, my "clients" are crime victims, largely women who have been victims of domestic violence, many of whom are reluctant subjects, and even if willing, are not relaxed. My work is a combination of portrait, macro, documentary, and spiced with elements of decisive-moment street. One rare assignment was shooting aerial photos from a police helicopter, at night! (probably a one-time, unique event) That was a challenge! My images are recorded and uploaded as JPEGs, then uploaded into a propriety system for use by the criminal justice system.

Still a first responder; my office is a white Crown Vic with PD markings.

None of this is meant to imply I am a "pro" or expert; just a serious beginner,
really. I had little experience with SLRs, digital or film, until last summer. I still
have zero experience processing digital images out-of-camera. Photographic
interests off the clock are mostly family and pet photos, for now. Birds and wildlife are potential interests when I acquire longer lenses.

Hello! I'm down the street in the med center. Welcome to the site!

You should come to some local meetup so we can ask you all sorts of questions about your job that sounds so much cooler than ours (or at least mine). Wait, we want you to come out; scratch that. You can come out, and you won't be bombarded with questions

Thanks for the welcome!

My job is not so unique, but my approach is unusual, as most of the patrol print/picture officers use much lesser cameras. I could check-out a tiny Sony P&S from the patrol office each night, but I elected to go with a pair of semi-pro-level camera bodies, and have been adding premium lenses as my budget allows, prioritizing fast lenses good for available-light portraits.

Unlike many of the CSU/CSI's subjects, my subjects are usually alive. I am trying hard, to work on my empathy, charm, confidence, and patience, while also developing photography skills. Composing really good images is the goal for now. Editing, photo shop, telephoto zooms for birds /wildlife, and a better computer, can wait 'til later, as time and funds become available.

Speaking of, there is a downtown photowalk planned. A lot of people will be using mobile devices, but you can bring a real camera if you want :)

It's about time...
I told you about TPF years ago, but that was before the camera bug bit, it seemed. Tell 'em what you're using while I go dig through my pile of stuff and see what I can sell you, since your full up on stuff from the other site...
