Hey, there. My name is Vanessa. I'm from Lake Charles, Louisiana. I recently purchased a Nikon D40 (with kit lens) from a friend who is "in a bind" for money so I got a really good deal. She even threw in a Solidex tripod!

My main subject for photography will be real estate and vehicles.. maybe people on occasion.

So far, I have purchased a Nikkor 35mm lens and a Nikkor 12-24mm lens but later on I'll be interested in buying a 10.5mm fish eye and a 70-200mm telephoto lens. I'd really like to make a trip to Houston Camera Exchange soon

Currently looking for an SB 900 flash.

Thanks for having me!

I just want to say that you may wish to slow down on you purchasing a wee bit.
Of course everthing can be sold but I hate to see you jump in and buy all that stuff without some experience under your belt. Also not sure if the D40 will fire the SB900 remotely which is something at some point you may wish to do. Perhaps consider the D7000 before anymore lens purchases. My two cents and I'm counting on others to chime in on this.

Thank y'all for the warm welcomes!

I was reading up and I think that the SB 600 will do what I need it to do. I don't plan on shooting weddings or anything like that until I get a higher model camera.

Welcome to Pixtus!

The SB-600 will work just fine on your D40 as long as you don't plan to use it as an off camera flash. If you do eventually want to do that you could either upgrade to another camera that can fire it (D80, D90, D300, D7000, etc) or purchase an SB-800, SB-900 to use on your D40. It could then command the SB-600. What we would have there is a master and slave situation. Sorry, I couldn't resist. That's a reference from another recent thread.

Your 12-24 will work very well for your real estate when shooting indoors.

LOL is that a reference from the YouTube vid someone posted last week?

Nikonfan, thank you for the advice. I was also looking at the SB 700 now as an on-camera flash. Any comments on that? Or do you think I should just spend the extra $ to get the SB 900 as an on-camera flash and will that be sufficient enough for real estate photos? I read that the SB 800 is discontinued. Thank you in advance for your help!!

Good catch! That was a reference to the thread with the hillarious You Tube video.

Regarding the strobes, the SB-600 was discontinued and replaced with the SB-700. The SB-800 was discontinued and replaced with the SB-900. It is rumored that the SB-900 is already being discontinued. This may be due to mixed reviews on it. Many people love it while some have reported some technical problems with it.

The primary differences between the 600/700 and the more expensive 800/900 is:

- the 800/900 are a little more powerfull
- the 800/900 can act as a commander to the 600/700 or another 800/900
- the 800/900 can accept an external battery pack

There may be mixed opinions on this, but if you are not doing weddings then I don't really see a need for an 800/900. The 600/700 should do just about everything you would need. You may be able to save a little $ by picking up an SB-600 used. Just be aware that the 600 is a bit harder to get the hang of when you first start using it than the 700. Hope that helps and wasn't too confusing.
