Hello from MN - 11-07-2006, 04:32 PM

Okay I know, what's a Minnesotan doing in a TX Photo Forum...well to learn. I've heard this is a good place so here I am. (I also heard about Tom's Tiger shoots). First off lets see....I am an unpolished beginning photog. I've been taking photos all my life but not very good ones. I want to learn and am always looking for critiques, advice, education, etc. I have Canon equipment, film is a Rebel G, Digital is a 20D. I'm open to new ideas and different things to shoot. Winter is coming up so this should be a fun way to challenge my skills. I hope one day to make this a career after I retire from my current one. Right now I am still exploring what kind of photography I want to concntrate on. So that's me in a nutshell.

Hey Saundra, Welcome to the forum. Lesson # 1 when photographing snow and using the meter in your camera always open up a couple of f-stops. Your camera is stupid and thinks that snow is gray so you have to tell it to add more light.

Thank you. I'm a bit new to this so when you mean open it up if the camera says 2.0 I'd go to 4.0?

Other way around.

If the camera meters f8 at 1/250 and you want to "open it up two stops" you could either use a wider aperture ( f4 ) or a longer shutter speed ( 1/60 ). Of course, you can mix aperture and shutter speed ( i.e. f5.6 at 1/125) , but in a nutshell you need to tell your camera that the meter reading it wants is not what you want. Most modern cameras will have exposure compensation and you would just set in EV + 2.

Learning the relationship between sensor (aka film speed), aperture, and shutter speed, will go a very long ways in teaching yourself how to take better and better pictures. Most people get a picture and if they don't like it, they discard it and go on to the next one. If you know why a picture failed, your next attempt should give you a better result. Eh ?
