Hello everyone,
I'm 33 years old, live in Farmers Branch (Dallas) and just recently entered the world photography when I purchased an original Digital Rebel off ebay in February. I wasn't sure I would stick with it or enjoy it as much as I have, so I wanted to start off on the less expensive end. Since then I have taken many photos and have come to very much enjoy the art and notice myself always searching for a great photo opputunity. But, I am still very much in the learning phase. I stumbled upon this great site by accident and have already learned quite a bit just reading through some of the posted threads. I have the 18-55mm kit lens that came with the camera and I purchased the Quantaray 70-300mm lens a few months ago....However, I was looking at getting a new higher quality lens without spending an arm and a leg (if this is possible). I've read a lot of reviews especially on the Canon 28-105 f/3.5-4.5 USM and the Canon 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS USM and they are just all over the place. Some people love them others hate them then suggest another lens, and when you read the reviews of the suggested lens they say it's not as good as the first.

Any suggestions???

Brian

Welcome from Frisco. I'll defer to others on the lens issue, since I shoot another barnd.

Welcome
You will get a lot of opinions here. I don't have experience with either of those lenses.

My general advice would be to limit the urge to "buy lots of glass".
It looks like you are considering a medium range zoom. I would advise you to get the very best quality lens you can possibly afford. If you have to put off purchasing a Canon brand L lens, I would say to save up and wait until you can get one. Also keep in mind that the faster lenses are more expensive, but they are usually very good. In my opinion, if you can afford the Canon L glass at f2.8 and it has IS, that would be the ideal. You will eventually move into a different body, and the lens will still be excellent. If you decide to leave the brand, or just quit, a great lens will hold its value better.

Welcome to the habit, and post some photos when you get a chance.

Thanks for the advise Tom.

I have tried to post some photos, but the files were to large and when I shrank the file size down to the required limit, it really screwed up the quality of the image. Am I doing something wrong???

Hello Brian and welcome to out little corner of the web!

I have used Fred Miranda's Review Section on Lens to great effect! What type of shooting do you do? I shoot wildflowers and people, therefore I have a macro lens (Canon 100mm macro) and a portrait lens (Canon 85mm). Your lens should be chosen on what you do. If you need a general purpose lens, many Canon shooters recommended the Canon 28-70mm and 70-200mm lenses.

Good luck!
