Hello all! help an rookie out! - 02-02-2008, 04:55 PM

As it will soon be apparent this is my first post here on TPF however i have been lurking around the place for some time. I was introduced to TPF through a fellow co-worker and (at least for now my Lt.) waytt..... for those of you that know him please no need to feel sorry as i have asked to be stationed with him. as to not drag this out too long and more to the point of this thread....ME i am a Firefighter/Paramedic i live in oklahoma with my wonderful wife and 5 of best children a father could ask for (blended family) ((wife only gave birth to 3)) I have always been interested in photography and decided to tip toe in to the world that many of you call home. I am just a beginner and have a sony f828 i know wyatt has already told me take the lens cap and put it on a canon and then i would have a place to start, but for now, and for the forseeable future thats what i am gonna use i feel that the camera woeful as it might be still is capable of far more than me. looking for a good field/style of photography to start with using this camera (knowing that if i start focusing on lets say, sports i will not be happy with the pictures and/or camera. hope the question is one that you all will be able to share your varing opinions on and i will keep keeping on.

thanks in advance for the help

cdn

wyatt my not have said all the things that i given him credit for above!!!!

I think most of us will have the same reply. What do you like to shoot? Find subjects you find interesting and start to shoot. From sports, to people, to flowers, and beyond...it's pretty much endless. Any camera (within reason?) can shoot about any subject, it's just a matter of what you like and then finding ways to capture that with what you have. Take some pictures, show us the results, get feedback, and so on. Good luck and welcome to the group!

I know I'm just a newbie, but when I got my camera last November, I used the rainy days inside to take pictures of things around the house. It's really a great way to force yourself to be creative, and it's the easiest way to learn about the settings of your camera and what you can create with something random like a bottle of wine, a wine glass, and fake grapes. Even oreos. The best thing about starting out like this is that there is no pressure, unless ofcourse your family is staring at you like you're crazy. But I think that's probably the best way to start, because you get a feel for the camera in a no pressure atmosphere.

Daniel, welcome to the group. I would recommend that you shoot lots of different subjects. Expericine it all. Then decide what you like to shoot. Sounds like you have a house full of subjects! Mine won't let me near them with a camera.

Welcome from Frisco, Daniel. Nice Avatar. Personally, I love to "play" with depth of field and perspective. Play with different angles and arrangement of subjects to other objects and backgrounds.
