Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone

This is a discussion on Mammoth Hot Springs, Yellowstone within the Landscapes forums, part of the Showcase category; One of the favorites, it was actually one of those "Hmmm, that could be a neat pic" semi-grab shots taken ...

One of the favorites, it was actually one of those "Hmmm, that could be a neat pic" semi-grab shots taken without a lot of planning or forethought. It seems to have an "other-worldly" look with the steam clouding everything, the long-dead trees and dark sky.

After spending a few hours there, we agreed that had we been pressed for time, we probably would have skipped this area. That would have been our loss, but the place really needs some serious photo planning to do it justice. The lighting can be friend or foe and unless you plan accordingly, you'll wind up with a lot of mid-day ho-hum shots. Like me.... unfortunately, Yellowstone is so $^&* big that you almost have to overnight where ever you want to shoot, since the distances to cover are so huge (and the speed limits so %^& low...)

Like the hot springs themselves, this pic kinda grows on me....

Another long dead tree, another view. Low light would be a godsend here. Remember that if you go.

Not exactly at Mammoth, but instead of starting a separate thread thought I would add this here. IIRC (notes are at home) this is at Norris Geyser Basin. I loved the colors as I shot this and struggled mightily last night to recreate them in the resulting image. Here at least the sun wasn't so high, and the orange tints took advantage of the lower light. The steam conveniently blocks a lot of people in the background....

I know a lot of folks love Yellowstone in B+W, but don't shortchange those colors.
