Arizona Trip #2 - 05-01-2010, 04:14 PM

Monument Valley, Utah:
Left the hotel at 5am and drove 20 minutes to be at this site for sunrise. Could have been better but I'm not complaining...

Walked around a mountain ledge. Each step opened up another beautiful view.
We were the only ones there. Can't image why the place was not full of photographers. I almost lost my camera/tripod on this ledge. The tripod was not on level ground and I saw it start tilting forward down a 500 foot cliff. I reached out and caught one of the tripod legs. I looked at my buddies who were too far to help, but I could see them leaning forward to try and help. LOL I was more careful after that.

A Navajo woman showing us how they make and use combs. In all my travels I've not come across such nice people. And I thought to myself, there really is very little difference between the people in North America, South & Central America, Europe and the Orient.

Angelo,
Great images, Angelo. Who was your Navajo guide?

Bill, His name was Gilbert. Here's his picture. I have his email if he's the one you
used.

Thanks Leon and Tommy. It was a great trip.

Angelo,
Yes, I would like his email. I have used a guide before, but I cannot remember his name. I'm not going until next spring, but I definitely want to use a guide as they can get you into locations that would not, otherwise, be available.

Bill, his email is gg_holiday@yahoo.com
We were 6 photographers and took 4 trips with him. Two early morning and two late afternoon (two days in all). We told him what kind we were looking for, the lighting and direction we wanted.

If you haven't already, Plan to spend time in Page, Arizona. The slot canyons are beautiful.

How does one go about finding a good guide for these trips? Is it upon arrival, can you prearrange it, and other word of mouth and personal recommendations such as the above, who do you ask/contact?

Andy, here are some numbers you can call to make all necessary arrangements.

Lake Powell Navajo Tribal Park - 928-698-2808
Navajo Parks and Recreation Department - 928-871-6647
Navajo Fish and Wildlife Department - 928-871-6451/6452 (for licenses)
Gouldings Lodge & Tours (here's where I made reservations for Monument Valley) 435-727-3231

I recommend you make reservations in advance.

I only spent one day at Antelope canyon. Next time i'll spend two days there. Also remember to try and schedule your tours mid day and with sun, so you can catch the stream of light that filters into the canyon.
