Question Displaying Panoramas Online? - 05-28-2010, 03:07 PM

I don't normally do panoramas but I went to downtown Dallas last night (with David Cantrell & Michael Kan) to shoot the skyline. David found a great spot. It was REALLY hazy but we got what we wanted I believe.

Now, the problem is that my panorama is really wide and is made from 11 raw D700 files. That's a pretty massive file that is just over 7.5' wide when printed... something like 22,400 pixels wide.

Well, if you try to display that online at around 1000 pixels... it just kinda looks small. Here is the image at 2000 pixels wide... yes, I know it's hard to see the left but it was the PP that made it dark on that side. I just liked how it look with this "sepia"-like feel.

So, what do you do when displaying panoramas online?

Thanks,

- Wil

Thanks Rob. I used Photoshop CS5. I just chose the "Merge to Panorama" option from Lightroom and launched CS5 and did the rest. It took a while and created a HUGE file.

Yes, CS5 did a very good stitching job. I don't print though... I'll let the lab take care of that.

Won't be able to get this exact shot in a few weeks after they put up that 40 story tall arch to support the new bridge over the River to West Dallas, heard that they are starting to hang the steel this week and it will take them a few weeks to do. Thinking of maybe documenting the arch and then the cables being added. Will need to hunt a spot out this weekend to shoot it from and then go back daily pretty much.

Nice shot btw.

Great shot, Wil. A few of my A900 panos have been so huge I could only upload the 50% size ones on SmugMug. I need to try the full size ones now that I have a pro account.

Thank you Paul. Yes, I'm sure the A900 files are quite large all by themselves... but very nice! Doing panos with files like that requires a lot of patience and RAM!

Here's one of the same one with a little different "feel":

Both versions are nice with the second one having more impact for me. The first one seems more subdued where the second suggests a more vibrant and energetic feel to the photo.

I completely agree. The first gives it a more tranquil look while the second seems like a great night life scene.

You can tell I am watching hockey because the first thing I thought with #2 was the Dallas Stars.

Really nice work Wil -- CS5 has done a fantastic job on the stitch -- but it's your attention to detail and technique to produce the input files that really sends these over the top. Nice work. It was a fun outing, and I'm just now getting rid of all the mosquito bites...

edit: typically I will post a smaller "thumbnail" version in a forum like this that links to the larger-sized version. I usually size the larger-sized versions so that they are ~500-800px in height and let the width follow as needed.

Thank you David. I'm interested to see how yours turns out. I know you mentioned PTGui but I'm totally unfamiliar with that program. Looking forward to seeing yours!

That's a great pano shot.

Judging from the map, seems you were pretty far out, what lens did you use?
