Austin Skyline (new photo added) - 07-05-2010, 09:25 PM

I have recently moved (back) to Austin. I found this vantage point in the parking garage at my company's building. It's too bad the Capitol is not visible. Ah well, I'll keep looking.

Thanks!

It's made from 8 individual images stitched together. Ive really been struggling with monitor settings. Here at work, this image looks kind of dark and I can't make out the detail in the foreground trees. At home in my processing setup, there is a lot of detail in the foreground trees, which is what I intended.

Do you see any detail in the foreground trees?

I'm still undecided how to finish the Dallas one. I've tried three different versions, none of which I like very much. You have set the bar so high with your version! ;)

I have a ton of processing to work though. It took me about a month to get set up in my new house, and I now have a huge backlog of processing work. I'm slowly chipping away at it.

Thanks David! It took a lot of work and that seems to be a common theme these days as to how to get our work to stand out in a crowd. The image alone usually just doesn't cut it. I am still looking forward to your version... when you get around to working on it.

Very nice pano David! - 07-06-2010, 06:58 PM

To answer your question about foreground tree detail, when I enlarge the image I can see some tree detail. However, I wouldn't want much more than I'm seeing -- very much detail at all would possibly compete with the detail in the skyline, which is your primary subject in this image. I think it looks real good.

The modern Austin skyline is a nice looking one, but I have to say that I miss being able to look from just about any direction and see the Capitol and UT Tower -- glad I got some shots of all that years ago

God Bless,
Greg

David - It's a very cool 8 pic pano and impressive! I can see some detail in the trees (even on my unfortunately uncalibrated monitor) And as mentioned before it's just enough for me too.. being able to see the variations in color etc. without pulling away from the skyline.

Wil - Between your Dallas and Jackson Hole/Teton shots.. all I can say is

One thought I had last night taking the Dallas shot was wondering how far over/back to the right would the fireworks from Fair Park be?... ie. would it have been worth it to wait and done a pano with them too.. May have to investigate next year.. I'm thinking they'd be too far over and too far back though...

David,

I think you're right... the fireworks will be a little too far off to the right. It would be interesting to see though for sure. Thanks for the compliments!

I was never really happy with this result, so I started from scratch with a set of photos from slightly later in the evening when the sky was darker and the buildings had more lights on. I changed the crop as well. Let me know if you think this is an improvement.

David, IMHO - I like them both however, there is more detail in the first one on my monitor. I do like the tighter crop on number 2. I hope one day I could capture a skyline that looked this nice!

You can still shoot from the levees. You just can't drive your vehicle onto them. I have a great spot where I park along Canada Drive and walk to the top of the levee. You get a clear shot of downtown from the southwest side.
